Leather Furniture Material Types
Not all leather is created equal. So, here are the different types of leather you will run into when you shop for a modern leather sofa.
1. Full-grain leather
This type comes from the top layer of the leather hide. You can spot all the natural grain because they aren't sanded or buffed leaving those markings and texture intact. It's durable and develops a rich patina over time. If a rich, lived-in leather look that betters with age is what you want? Choose this.
2. Top-grain leather
Still a great quality leather used in leather sofa sets, but a bit more processed to remove the imperfections which gives it a more uniform look and a softer feel. It doesn't age quite as naturally as full-grain. Still it is high-end and holds up really well.
3. Genuine leather
Also known as corrected-grain leather, this type is a heavily processed one. The flaws on the leather are cleared and a grain pattern is stamped on it to make it look more consistent. You can find them coasted with pigments or finishes that makes it more resistant to stains and wear.
4. Split leather
This comes from the lower layers of the hide and aren't as strong as the top layers. This type is often used on the sides or back of the leather couch sofa where you aren't touching it much. It can still look decent but it's definitely not in the same quality as full or top-grain.
